| Joint Replacement is a very useful method of treatment for severe osteo-arthritis. However, in very simple terms it is an internal amputation of the knee joint with replacement by a prosthesis. Usually, these prosthetic joints have a limited life span & may thus not be a very good option for young individuals. The risk of infection & the subsequent disastrous consequences are a known complication of joint replacement. An alternative in the form of high tibial osteotomy is available which allows the alignment of the joint to be changed thereby significantly reducing the symptoms, relieving the patient of pain and if done early enough obviating the need for joint replacement completely. These patients if required, at a much later date, can always go in for a joint replacement surgery. |
